Who is Berto?

You may remember Norberto Lopez as “Berto” from his previous restaurant on Boundary Street (where Brick’s is now) or from his Taqueria in Shell Point. Many people in Beaufort often reminisce about going to his restaurant on Boundary for the guacomole made fresh at their table, homemade salsas, shrimp tacos made with fresh pressed corn tortillas and many other authentic dishes that are still described as the best Mexican food in Beaufort! Norberto is proud to now be serving all of these same dishes and more in the village setting of the Habersham Marketplace.

Norberto Lopez is no rookie in the kitchen. He grew up in Mexico and immediately got involved in the food industry when he came to the United States in 1989. Norberto’s career in the United States is a classic testament to the rewards of hard work. After leaving Mexico, Norberto began working as a line cook for Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse in New Jersey. Because of his dedication and work ethic over his 14 years there, he worked his way up the ranks to head chef, which he held for his last 6 years at the high-end restaurant. During those 14 years, Norberto not only learned how to cook, but also the importance of treating the customers with respect and gratitude. He brought those lessons with him to Beaufort by applying them to his own restaurants, which he hopes gives Berto’s a personable touch.

Berto’s in the Habersham Marketplace specializes in well-made Mexican food and an atmosphere that is unique to this area. The intimate setting inside is focused around the beautiful Equipale furniture, which was hand-crafted in Mexico. When the weather is nice, café tables spill outside into the shaded courtyard and the sidewalk. You are sure to enjoy your Margarita and guacomole at either!
